Empowering Women Through Dance

In the heart of Tharaka Nithi County, 22 talented and determined women have lifted themselves out of severe poverty and become agents of positive change in their community. Meet the Mugumango Traditional Dancers, which received funding through HopeCore's Micro Enterprise program. Their journey showcases how a passion for music and dance can lead to empowerment and social impact.

The Mugumango Traditional Dancers began their journey as a group of 22 members back in 2015. Initially, they performed for free in church events, using their dancing and singing skills to bring joy and entertainment to others. Their talent quickly gained recognition, and people started appreciating their performances, inviting them to various events. The group officially registered, and in 2012, they had the honor of entertaining President Mwai Kibaki during his visit to Tharaka Nithi County.

As their popularity grew, the Mugumango Traditional Dancers realized the potential of their talent to become more than just entertainment. They decided to form a self-help group that enabled them to join HopeCore's Micro Enterprise program. With funding support, the dancers transformed their passion into a thriving business, using their performances to educate the community on emerging issues like corruption and women empowerment.

In 2018, the Mugumango Traditional Dancers received their first cycle loan of Kshs 745,000 (approx. $7,450) from HopeCore and essential business training. This financial support has opened up new opportunities for the group members. They invested in various ventures with the funding, from farming and dairy farming to establishing well-running businesses. The newfound income has not only improved their livelihoods but has also given them financial independence and security.

The Mugumango Traditional Dancers have not only graced various HopeCore events, including the Micro Enterprise Alumni Day and local fundraisers, but they have also become ambassadors of positive change. Their performances serve as a platform to spread awareness about important issues affecting their community, empowering others to take action and improve their lives.
